The clearance market is full of legitimate businesses shifting real branded goods at honest prices. But not every seller is on the level. Here is how to tell the difference before you hand over your money.

Look at the Seller First

Before you even look at the product, check out who is selling it. The seller tells you more than the product listing ever will.

• VAT status: Any serious UK clearance operation will be registered for VAT and happy to provide a proper invoice. No invoice? Walk away.
• Real contact details: A genuine business has a phone number someone answers, an email that gets replied to, and a physical address you can find on a map.
• Company registration: Check Companies House. A legitimate UK business will have a company number you can verify in seconds.
• Transparency about sourcing: Good sellers will tell you exactly why their prices are low. Discontinued stock, excess inventory, cancelled orders. If they cannot explain it, that is a problem.

Then Check the Product

Once you have the product in hand, there are several things to look for:

Packaging. Real clearance comes in the original manufacturer packaging. It might have a bit of shelf wear or a price sticker from the previous retailer, but the branding, barcodes, and product information should all be there and match the product inside.

Barcodes. Scan it with a free barcode app on your phone. The result should match the product and brand listed. If it comes up as something different or does not register at all, be cautious.

Serial numbers. Electricals and higher-value items should have serial numbers you can verify with the manufacturer if needed. This also matters for warranty purposes.

Build quality. Branded products have a consistent finish. Dodgy printing, cheap materials, misaligned labels, or missing documentation usually mean it is not the real thing.
